How to Hear Important Alerts Without Watching Your Screen
Some alerts matter while your eyes are busy somewhere else. In that situation, another visual notification is not always the best answer.
Use a different sensory channel
Visual notifications assume that you are looking at the right screen at the right time. Audio can reach you while your visual attention is occupied.
Good audio-alert use cases
- Watching charts or dashboards.
- Coding or working in another application.
- Gaming with Discord open in the background.
- Cooking or moving around the room.
- Monitoring a small number of time-sensitive channels.
Do not make everything audible
Speaking every notification creates a new form of noise. The useful approach is selective: identify the alerts that justify interruption and keep the rest visual or silent.
A simple setup
- Choose the source of the important alert.
- Reduce irrelevant notifications from that source.
- Route the high-value messages to audio.
- Test whether you can understand the spoken alert quickly enough to act.
Toldya's approach
Toldya lets you choose a Discord Web channel, optionally filter by author, and hear matching new messages through Chrome and your operating system's text-to-speech voices.
